Resident’s daughter arrived to The Grove at Valhalla in seek of a community tour for a rehabilitation community that would best support her mother, whom was hospitalized. With strong affiliations with the community, the team at The Grove were very much excited to welcome the resident and her family as well as provide state-of-the-art care to encourage healing and optimum health.

The resident found great appreciation for the staff on the short term unit, as well as befriending several other residents who were also at The Grove for their own personal rehabilitation journeys.

Always smiling and upbeat, the resident received the kindness, attentiveness and professionalism befitting a resident of The Grove at Valhalla. We are proud to say that within a short 21 days, The Grove was able to safely discharge this resident back home to her family.

Upon discharging, the resident shared,
“The Nursing staff at The Grove have all provided us with a very positive experience. They treated my mother with the utmost respect and dignity- and for that, I am grateful. I saw teamwork being displayed: when asked, I was assisted by any member of The Grove staff, even if they weren’t assigned to my mother. The therapy was amazing, getting my mom strong and ready to head home. Abe, the concierge, was lovely with us – thank you for everything”

Admission Date: 12/22/16
Admitted From: Phelps Memorial Hospital
Discharge Date: 1/3/16
Discharged To: Home
Length of Stay: 10 Days
Reason for Stay: Hip replacement

Details of Experience:

The patient presented with an interesting and challenging request to be rehabilitated and safely discharged back home within ten days per their diagnoses. Noted as a relatively “younger” resident in age, their goal was to achieve their clinical goals over a holiday period in efforts of returning home as quickly as possible.

The interdisciplinary team at The Grove viewed this patient’s request as an excellent opportunity to provide optimal levels of care in hopes that the patient’s wishes could be fulfilled within the ten day time frame of inpatient care. The comprehensive care plan created on behalf of the patient was constructed to project a potential discharge date of within ten days and as in the case of all under the care of The Grove, the care plan was carried out to respect the patient-centered experience each patient is provided with when at The Grove.

The patient was supported to achieve more through the encouragement of fellow patients and staff. Within a mere 24 hours, the patient had connected with various departments within the community, including that of: the nursing staff, therapists, administration and social work.

The affect and atmosphere he was surrounded with was one of nurturing support and genuine care. He was all smiles for the duration of his therapy stay, and even ended requesting an extension of a few days to be able to spend some more time with his therapists. We wish this patient an incredible continued journey of renewed health!

Case Study: The Grove at Valhalla Rehabilitation & Nursing Center (November 2016)

Patients Age: 56
Admission Date: 10/27/16
Admitted From: Burke Rehab
Discharge Date: 11/15/16
Discharged To: Home
Length of Stay: 18 Days
Reason for Stay: Continued Rehabilitation

Details of Experience:

Resident arrived to The Grove in mediocre spirits. She underwent extensive therapy at Burke and, understandably, just wanted to return home. After arriving at The Grove, she met her personal concierge and was ‘walked through’ the day-to-day schedule and programs she would be involved with. What stood out to her was not only the physical and occupational therapy, but the impressive array of recreational therapeutic activities she was offered. On a daily basis, her unit was graced with live music, poetry, current events and much, much more.

Day one went very much like day ten, and day 25. As a short term patient, she enjoyed her meals in the beautiful country style dining area with the other residents, had both her therapy sessions, enjoyed the recreational activities offered and relaxed with the amenities provided for her at The Grove, such as her flat screen TV and fully equipped library.

Although originally she had wanted to be home, after spending a few days at The Grove, this resident saw the tremendous benefits to being at The Grove, and felt very much ‘at home’ while being here. “Home away from home” is how she described it. In fact, she had this to say, upon discharge: “I wish I would have known of The Grove earlier; it is by far the best facility I’ve ever been to. The therapy department here was amazing! And the nurses were all so kind and caring. Thank you for helping me get back home so soon!”

Another job well done, team Grove!

Ugly Sweater Day 2016

December 16th was “Ugly Sweater Day” at The Grove! The team was proudly struttin’ their ugly sweaters throughout the community. Great job to all staff who participated, happy holidays, and a huge congrats to our winner, Brian Cook, one of our Speech Language Pathologists!

Happy Holidays from The Grove!
We kicked off the holiday season together with a “Decorating & Dessert Day.” All Grove staff brought in a dessert to share with their co-workers and joined in the fun of “Decking the Halls” of The Grove for the upcoming holiday season. Each team member that brought in a dessert to share was entered into a raffle for an end of the day raffle- and we are proud to announce that Jessica Davidson, from the Rehab department, won! Congrats! Additionally, all Nurse Unit Managers and our Therapy Department were given a budget to work together with their staff and decorate their nurse’s stations in the holiday spirit, competing with each other for the “most festive station.” The winning team will win a pizza party for their unit. Judging will be done on Monday, Dec. 5th by some of our residents and staff. Lastly, we are proud to announce the beginning of our “25 days of giveaways”: from December 1st and every day up until the 25th, a Grove team-member will win a small gift! Each day a name will be drawn from the raffle box and the winner will be announced and asked to come to the main lobby to pick up their gift. It could be anything from a small box of candy to a Dunkin Donuts gift card…something small to bring a little joy to your holiday season.
