Details of Experience:

Eugine B. arrived at The Grove Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center on November 1st following a fall at home that resulted in a serious injury and sudden loss of mobility. The fall occurred as she was walking toward her kitchen, when she suddenly went down and reported that she could not feel her left leg. At the time, Genie was home with her aide, who immediately called an ambulance and continued to contact Eugine’s cousin and niece to ensure her family was informed and supported. Genie was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, where she underwent surgery for a fracture to her left femur. After several days of recovery and reviewing rehabilitation options, Genie chose The Grove for skilled nursing care and therapy to support her recovery.

Upon arrival, Genie’s first impression of The Grove was positive. She described the facility as bright, clean, and well-lit, and noted the strong staff presence, which helped her feel reassured during an uncertain time. At the start of her stay, Genie was bedbound and unable to walk. Beginning therapy was emotionally and physically challenging, and she experienced significant anxiety as she started her rehabilitation journey. However, with consistent encouragement and support from her therapy team — Kerriann and Abe — Genie began to make steady progress. By her second week, she was able to stand, and by the end of her first month, she had begun taking steps. Now, two months into her stay, Genie is able to walk with assistance and has recently navigated a few steps with assistance, a milestone she never anticipated achieving. Reflecting on her progress, she shared, “I never expected to make the progress I have.”

Beyond therapy, Genie found joy and comfort in engaging in musical activities, especially playing the piano, which became her favorite part of her stay. Music provided her with emotional comfort and a sense of familiarity. She also expressed gratitude for her roommates, whose presence and companionship helped reduce feelings of loneliness.

Throughout her stay, Genie felt especially supported by the nursing and aide staff. She specifically expressed appreciation for Tina, her evening nurse, as well as the following aides: Sandra Dee, whom she describes as reliable and deeply caring, and Maria, whose constant smile and pleasant demeanor brightened her days. Genie shared, “I feel certain people make me feel at home,” emphasizing the meaningful relationships she formed during her recovery.

As the new year begins, Genie’s goal is to return home, and she is deeply thankful for the dedication and compassion of the entire Grove team. She credits their support for helping her regain not only her mobility, but also her confidence and sense of self, stating that their care has helped her return to a place where she truly feels like herself again.
